Valerie Mitchener was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in New Jersey before moving south in 1986, to attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After graduating with a B.A. in English, she worked as a writer and purchased a company a few years later called TextWorks, which provided documentation and training materials for the banking industry. During this time, she also enjoyed renovating homes on the side. In 1998, Valerie sold her company, earned a real estate license, joined a local residential real estate agency, and quickly rose through the ranks to become a consistent top producer. She had found her passion!
Eight years later, she turned a dream of owning her own real estate company into a reality and founded Corcoran HM Properties in 2006.
Corcoran HM Properties started out as a small, independent boutique agency with six brokers and two staff members which quickly grew to be one of the leading residential real estate companies in the Charlotte region. Despite the recession which began two years later, Corcoran HM Properties continued to surge forward to become an award-winning real estate company. Building the business wasn't easy during those first few years and it was made even more challenging during the tumultuous market when many real estate companies were forced to close, downsize or merge.
In the face of many obstacles, Corcoran HM Properties expanded to over 50 brokers and seven full-time staff by the end of 2009, and in 2011, the company was honored as one of The Charlotte Business Journal's "Fast 50" fastest-growing, mid-sized private companies in the Charlotte region. In addition, Corcoran HM Properties won The Charlotte Business Journal's "Best Places to Work" Award for mid-sized companies in 2009, and have been the Official Realtor® of the Charlotte Hornets since 2010.
On a personal level, Valerie was chosen as one of the Most Admired CEO's Award in 2022 by The Charlotte Business Journal and was also one of the "Top 25 Women in Business" in 2010 by The Charlotte Business Journal. In 2012, she was honored to be among the winners of the "50 Influential Women Award" by The Mecklenburg Times.
Looking back to that time, Mitchener said, "We could have given up, but we banded together and kept moving forward. Quitting was never an option."
Valerie attributes much of the success to having a unique business model that allowed her to build a niche within a very competitive real estate market. With a focus of creating a high end brand, Valerie has carefully hand-picked top brokers in the region who possess extraordinary customer service skills, experience and knowledge of our market, and a strong work ethic. Selecting the right combination of brokers and staff was a key component to being able to provide consistent and exceptional customer service.
From the beginning, every choice was intentional from the office location to the company colors, logo design, print collateral and advertising, right down to the office wall paint color and furniture choices which were chosen with the HM brand in mind. The look was reflective of the brand and it did not take long to set Corcoran HM Properties apart from its competition.
A year later, Valerie made a decision to purchase her own building instead of continuing to lease. Always looking ahead to build toward the future, she purchased a 6,850 sq. ft. two-story building in SouthPark, and began a complete renovation of the interior and exterior facade in the spring of 2015. Six months later, the company moved from its former location in Piedmont Town Center to the new location across from Phillips Place in SouthPark.
This new office space was designed by Mitchener and Robert Johnson Architects and was renovated by D4 Construction. The layout and design is reflective of the company's brand and features an open two-story foyer, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, marble floors, sleek décor, and comfortable working spaces throughout. "A lot of thought went into the design," Mitchener said. "I want the agents and staff feel at home when they are here."
Corcoran HM Properties opened its second office in July 2018, and it is in the Waverly development off Providence Road near I-485 in Charlotte. A third office was opened in September 2019 in the Lake Norman area of Mooresville off Brawley School Road off I-77/Exit 35 and in June 2022, we opened our fourth office located in Charleston, South Carolina overlooking the Cooper River.
Valerie leads by example and has instilled in her brokers and staff the importance of taking time to build personal and lasting relationships with each of our clients and vendors. She has also made it a priority to keep the brokers informed and ahead of competition by providing formal and informal continuing education opportunities. Helping her brokers to be able to understand and successfully navigate through complex real estate related transactions or issues is something she takes very seriously. She also has a tremendous work ethic and is always looking to new ways to grow the company and brand. Valerie's unparalleled determination to succeed is only matched by her passion for real estate.
"One of the best things about being a part of Corcoran HM Properties is that we are like family and whenever someone needs assistance with anything there are always many offers to help. We truly care about each other and it is an honor to be able to help each other reach success." said Mitchener.
In 2015, Valerie was elected to be on the board of directors of the Charlotte Regional Realtors Association (CRRA) and enjoys being able to give back to an organization that has been so instrumental in helping her over the years. For the past three years, she and Corcoran HM Properties have sponsored the annual CRRA Realtors Care Day each spring and "adopted" a low-income homeowner who needed help making interior and exterior repairs on their home.
Valerie also enjoys working with children and helping them to be successful. In 2014, she was one of the founders of the "Yes, I Can Play Foundation", a non-profit organization that believes all children should be able to play sports and raises funds to help children whose families are unable to afford expenses associated with participating in Yes I Can Basketball or other youth sports programs.
On a more personal note, Valerie and her husband, Joe Pellegrini, married in 2011, and live in the Foxcroft neighborhood in a home they designed and built. Joe is a managing director for an investment banking firm and a former NFL player. Valerie has two children; Calvin (26) who is also a Broker with Corcoran HM Properties and Spencer (23), a student UNCC.
Outside of work, Valerie likes building and renovating homes and honing her skills with interior design projects. Valerie treasures spending quality time with her family and dog, Bailey. She also enjoys spending time with her family at their beach home in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, traveling, writing, and watching professional sports. A season ticket holder of Hornets and Panthers, she enjoys attending these games.
To date, Corcoran HM Properties has 125 agents and 14 employees including in-house relocation and marketing departments.
I had the pleasure of working with Val from the searching for the right property through selection, closing and thereafter. She has extraordinary experience, knowledge and ability, but more importantly, she has genuine care and concern for the best interests of her client. Having practiced real estate law for over twenty-five years in New York and around the country, I can say that Val is the best broker I have ever met.JFox 5
Professional, responsive, good listener and sharp eye. Helped us with several properties over the course of a few years. Patient with us as we worked through offers, values and desires. We called her about a lot we found and she pulled it together all the way through closing.Eric3902
Hands down, best in the business. She is more knowledgeable about her field than I can explain in this short review. She was direct and accurate with her feedback and suggestions to help our home to sell quickly. She is well connected in the Charlotte community and that also helped in our timely sale! Thanks, Val!Lewis E

Valerie is extremely knowledgeable about the Charlotte real estate market. Her advice on market conditions, pricing and other related matters was very accurate. She successfully promoted the sale of the residence through open houses, multiple listing services and advertisements.Lia M
Valerie is a consummate professional who has extraordinary subject matter and market place expertise. Valerie built and maintains a reputation of high integrity including a very positive brand with her peers in the industry. She is highly regarded by other firms and other agents. Valerie is a skilled negotiator and is passionate about her work. Valerie has represented me on several home sales and on several purchases, as well. There are many realty companies in the marketplace and even more agents. Valerie Mitchener and her firm HM Properties are a cut above the rest. Valerie was a small business owner prior to owning her firm and applies a standard of experience, expertise and excellence to all interactions and transactions.Happy Client
We worked on two transactions with Val: we bought and sold the same house. In both, we found her local expertise to be exceptional. She carefully guided us through the acquisition process which included a couple sticky issues around pricing and concessions. She got us comfortable with the market pricing and we executed. That turned out to be fruitful. We moved in, completed some renovations, and then needed to relocate for a job in another market. We ended up asking her to compete against several other reputable agents in the market so we could evaluate asking price, commissions, and sales planning. There were no doubts about her market experience after completing the evaluation process. One agent told us we were not thinking realistically when suggesting that our asking price was more than $150k above comps. We did not share that information with Val in advance to be completely objective. She gave us a thorough review of the market and her thoughts on asking price exceeded my expectations. Moreover, she laid out an effective process that made us feel confident and comfortable. We signed back up. Three weeks later, we entered into a contract that was within expectations (and a net 31% increase over the acquisition price some 36 months earlier). It proved to be a tough closing process, and she managed the negotiation process with a deft hand and was a fierce advocate for us. We felt she was genuinely on OUR SIDE the whole time and not just trying to close a deal. We are tough customers with whom to deal because we set high expectations for all of our service providers. She exceeded each and everyone of them from professionalism, client advocacy, accessibility, and thoughtful sales strategy. I would say that they are even some of the best service providers of any industry in the Charlotte metro market. We highly recommend Val for anyone seeking the services of a real estate agent.Trey E
My experience from working with Valerie from the very beginning to the sale of our home was a great experience. Valerie was pleasant, direct, honest and I always felt she was upfront with me. During the entire process I was completely comfortable and never once doubted my decision to use her to sell our home. Valerie is passionate about what she does which brings much confidence and security. I highly recommend Valerie and her team.SJBR
Valerie gave me great advice on what to do prior to HM listing my house. She always gave me notice before showing my house and gave me prompt feedback. She was great during the negotiations and with guiding me through finding movers, helping me find workmen to get quotes from for my new home, and reminded me of the things "to do" i.e. Discontinue insurance on "old" home, insure new home, transfer utilities etc. Valerie made everything so easy.Igssgs

Valerie is simply the best. My family and I will be forever grateful to her for everything she did to help our relocation to Charlotte. Her service level is impeccable, her knowledge of the properties and neighborhoods is unsurpassed, and she really takes the time to understand exactly what you are looking for. I highly recommend Valerie.Val Fan
Valerie is the best! With unmatched knowledge of the local market and years of experience, we felt very comfortable entrusting her with the sale of our home. The home sold quickly and for top market value.Dan T
Working with Valerie was very smooth and easy. She was very helpful beyond the purchase of the lot by recommending builders and making sure that I would get soil engineer reports etc. I highly recommend her and would certainly chose her again for any future real estate transaction.Frankinclt
Valerie negotiated our home sale with a particularly difficult client. Without her help and expertise the sale would not have concluded. We needed significant, unexpected repairs to an expensive home and the repair was organized rapidly and at a significant discount to the expected price. Let me state this again. The deal would not have concluded without Valerie's expertise.Twbent
Valerie is an outstanding real estate agent. She knows the business very well and provided guidance and suggestions without being pushy or controlling. She is the most knowledgeable agent my husband and I have encountered including having bought and sold property in areas such as D.C. I highly recommend Valerie without reservation. I appreciate the hard work she put forward in selling our home. All of her suggestions were spot on. Thank you, Valerie, for a very positive experience!Eleanor & Lewis M
